The Garda Memorial at Garda Headquarters

In memory of the members of the Garda Síochána who have
laid down their lives in the service of their country.


Garda Henry Phelan, (1347),
Callan, Co. Kilkenny.


A farmer's son from Co. Laois. Born 24.12.1900.
Died 14.11.1922, aged 21 years.


On 28.10.1922, a party of the Garda Siochana opened a station in Callan and started a hurling team. Garda Phelan was in Mullinahone, Co. Tipperary, buying hurlers on 8.11.1922 when he was shot dead.


Sergeant James Woods, (2358),
Scartaglen, Co. Kerry.


A farmer's son from Co. Clare. Born 25.03.1900.
Died 03.12.1923, aged 23 years.

Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow.


A railway signalman from Co. Galway. Born 15.05.1896.
Died 29.01.1924, aged 27 years.


Shot and mortally wounded, was shot & mortally wounded while trying to arrest 2 bank raiders at Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow on 28.01.1924.


Sergeant Thomas Griffin, (814),
Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary.


A mechanic from Cork City. Born 12.04.1899.
Died 07.05.1924, aged 25 years.


Shot and mortally wounded with Garda John Alphonsus Murrin on 6.5.1924 at Cregg, Carrick-on-Suir, attempting to arrest an armed criminal at Cregg, Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary on 06.05.1924.

A merchant from Co. Donegal. Born 23.03.1898.
Died 19.10.1924, aged 26 years.


Shot and mortally wounded with Sergeant Thomas Griffin on 6.5.1924 at Cregg, Carrick-on-Suir, attempting to arrest an armed criminal at Cregg, Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary on 06.05.1924.


Garda Thomas Dowling, (5708),
Fanore, Co. Clare.


A carpenter from Co. Kilkenny. Born 05.07.1896.
Died 28.12.1925, aged 29 years.


Ambushed and shot dead at Craggagh, Fanore, in reprisal for his enforcement of the illicit distillation laws.


Sergeant James Fitzsimmons, (2566),
St. Luke's, Cork City.


An electrician from Belfast. Born 23.05.1903.
Died 14.11.1926, aged 23 years.


On the night of 14.11.1926 many Garda stations were attacked by armed gangs. Sergeant Fitzsimmons was shot dead when an armed gang attacked St. Luke's Garda Station.


Garda Hugh Ward, (5663),
Hollyford, Co. Tipperary.


A farmer's son from Co. Meath. Born 14.02.1897.
Died 16.11.1926, aged 29 years.


On the night of 14.11.1926 many Garda stations were attacked by armed gangs. Garda Ward mortally wounded when an armed gang attacked Hollyford Garda Station.

A baker from Co. Cork. Born 27.11.1896.
Died 11.06.1929, aged 32 years.


Killed by a booby-trap bomb at Tullycrine, Co. Clare.

Tipperary Town.


An engine driver from Co. Cork. Born 10.10.1902.
Died 21.03.1931, aged 28 years.


Ambushed and shot dead outside his home in Tipperary.

Union Quay, Cork City.


A farmer's son from Co. Limerick. Born 11.06.1905.
Died 04.01.1940, aged 34 years.


Shot and mortally wounded arresting a wanted man, 3.1.1940, at McCurtain Street, Cork.


Sergeant Patrick McKeown, (DMP 11919),
Blackrock, Co. Dublin.


A labourer from Co. Armagh. Born 09.04.1901.
Died 17.08.1940, aged 39 years.


Garda Hyland was shot dead, and Sergeant McKeown mortally wounded attempting to arrest a wanted men, in Rathgar, Dublin.

A shop assistant from Co. Kildare. Born 26.10.1903.
Died 16.08.1940, aged 36 years.


Garda Hyland was shot dead, and Sergeant McKeown mortally wounded attempting to arrest a wanted men, in Rathgar, Dublin.

A clerk from Dublin. Born 17.06.1899.
Died 09.09.1942, aged 43 years.


Ambushed and shot dead outside his home at Ballyboden, Co. Dublin.

Died 01.10.1942, aged 41 years.


Shot dead, Ballyjamesduff, attempting to arrest a wanted man.

A railway guard from Dublin. Born 24.09.1897.
Died 24.10.1942, aged 45 years.


Shot dead, Donnycarney, attempting to arrest a wanted man.


Garda Richard Christopher Fallon, (9936),
Mountjoy, Dublin.


A farmer's son from Co. Roscommon. Born 18.12.1926.
Died 03.04.1970, aged 43 years.


Shot dead at Arran Quay, attempting to arrest five armed bank raiders.


Inspector Samuel Donegan, (8586),
Cavan Town.


A farmer's son from Co. Longford. Born 20.11.1911.
Died 08.06.1972, aged 60 years.


Killed by a booby trap bomb on the roadside at Drumboghanagh, Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh.

A builder's labourer from Co. Galway. Born 09.02.1945.
Died 11.09.1975, aged 30 years.


Shot dead in Raheny, attempting to arrest two armed bank raiders.

A farmer's son from Kilmactranny, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Born 16.12.1958.
Died 20.02.1982, aged 23 years.


Garda Reynolds was in a party surrounding premises suspected as a hiding place for stolen property when he was shot dead.

A shop assistant from Mullingar Town. Born 09.12.1941.
Died 11.04.1983, aged 41 years.


Sergeant Patrick Christopher Noel McLoughlin was shot dead at Dunboyne, Co. Meath when he was answering a night call at his home on 11.04.1983


Recruit Garda Peter Garry Mary Sheehan, (23589),
Training Centre, Templemore, Co. Tipperary.


An engineer-technician from Monaghan Town. Born 24.09.1960.
Died 16.12.1983, aged 23 years.


Was taking part in a joint Garda/Army search for kidnappers when he found their hiding place and was shot dead at Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim.

A farmer's son from Co. Roscommon. Born 29.08.1957.
Died 10.08.1984, aged 26 years.


Escorting a mail van, ambushed by an armed gang and shot dead at Drumree, Co. Meath.


Sergeant Patrick Joseph Acquinas Morrissey, (14545),
Collon, Co. Louth.


A builder's foreman from Co. Cavan. Born 07.03.1936.
Died 27.06.1985, aged 49 years.


Sergeant Patrick Joseph Acquinas Morrissey was shot dead in pursuit of two armed men who had made an abortive raid on a post office at Collon, Co. Louth on 27.06.1985

From Dublin. Born 05.01.1956.
Died 18.05.1995, aged 39 years.


Fatally injured while on duty with UNPROFOR at 'Snipers Alley' Sarajevo.


Garda Jeremiah Desmond McCabe, (15860),
Henry Street, Limerick.


From Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. Born 22.11.1943.
Died 07.06.1996, aged 52 years.


Escorting a mail van, ambushed by armed gang and shot and mortally wounded in an abortive raid at Adare, Co. Limerick on 07.06.1996


Sergeant Andrew Callinan, (22477D),
Tallaght, Dublin.


From Thurles, Co. Tipperary. Born 08.01.1963.
Died 21.07.1999, aged 36 years.


Sergeant Callanan was on duty in Tallaght Garda Station, Dublin on 21.7.1999, when a man entered, poured petrol out of a can and set it alight with a flare. While Sergeant Callanan was attempting to save the life of the attacker he became engulfed in flames and died later.
