Entry Criteria for the 1997 Garda Síochána Recruitment Competition
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must be at least 18 and under 26 years of age on 1 June 1997, i.e. must have been born between 2 June 1971 and 1 June 1979, (certain exemptions may apply for service in Ireland's
Defence Forces).
Male candidates must be not less than 5 feet 9 inches (175.26 cms) in height, while female candidates must be not less than 5 feet 5 inches (165.10 cms) in height.
Candidates must have obtained a grade not lower than D at Ordinary Level in at least 5 subjects, including Irish, English, Mathematics, in the Established Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme,
or
At least not lower than D at Ordinary Level in at least 3 subjects, including English, together with a grade B at Foundation Level in Mathematics and at least a grade C at Foundation Level
in Irish in either the Established Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme,
or
The Merit Grade in Applied Leaving,
or
Like Grades in another examination, which in the Minister of Justice's opinion is not of a lower standard than the above.
Candidates sitting this years Leaving Certificate may apply.
COMPETITION
As part of the selection process candidates will be required to undergo a written assessment conducted by the Civil Service Commission in September next. Those securing highest placing on the result of this assessment will be called for further assessment including competitive interview.
TRAINING
There is a 2 year programme of training for membership of the Garda Síochána. Successful candidates - those selected as trainees - will be eligible for appointment as members of the Garda Síochána only on satisfactory completion of 62 weeks training.

Completed Application Forms together with a recently taken photograph (passport size) must be forwarded direct by the applicants to reach the Civil Service Office Commission, 1 Lower Grand Canal Street, Dublin 2, not later than 5:30 pm on Monday, 30th June 1997.
